The worst part of this isn't just that we lost but that it now defines our entire season. Rest of the year doesn't even matter now.
And to think we joked last week about having to make up the ECU game in order to get bowl eligible JMU was certainly better then their record that year. I wonder how both our season and ODU's seasons shake out. I wouldn't be surprised if we slump after this loss, but also wouldn't be surpassed if ODU plays like dog shit the rest of the year. It will effect more than the current season. Another trophy case loss that we are known for.
Recruiting and donations will surely be impacted well beyond what we imagine. Every coach and every player is at fault here. I watched a lot of young and inexperienced kids make many mistakes. I also saw some boneheaded plays -some attributed to youth Bad, no Perhaps that ECU game might've been a significant need to continue to teach or to at least maintain whatever sharpness the team had The defense played terrible but the offense was atrocious against a defense that got shredded by goddamn Liberty.
We were not at all prepared for tonight and this is a recurring theme over the Fuente era. We shit ourselves against bad teams yearly. Defense gave up 49 points. To ODU. Let that sink in, then realize the O scored Which should have been enough to win. Liberty scored 52 on this defense. The defense played awful but this offense completely shit itself today. Let me repeat: they scored Which is enough to win the vast majority of football games against CUSA teams.
This is so true Yes we scored It's effing ODU. We should not have needed to punt today. Our first team offense should have moved the ball at will. Even so it did score 35 points. Defense gave up 49 against a team that scored 10 vs Liberty and 20 against FIU. The offense put up yards ie, not atrocious and failed to sustain drives early. The defense just didn't prepare to play today and it showed on the screen, the scoreboard, and the box score.
I thought coming into the year this was a 6-win team. Now I'm starting to worry if they even get that. This defense is atrocious. I typed out parts of a post three times since the game ended but there's really nothing to say here, either insightful or quippy. All that this loss does is knock us out of the national championship picture. It's not even an ACC game. I keep writing random thoughts, and some of 'em actually get posted proof here.
I'm gonna be in Raleigh-Durham Durham? I don't know cheering 'em on and hoping to be 1st place in the Coastal standings next Saturday night. Players believing they're good enough to phone in a game is one thing because we've seen that before This was as much a team effort as I've ever seen It definitely made this loss even worse.
The announcers were treating it as an upset from about halfway through the first quarter. I guess they were right but still, they were worse than Herbstreit was during the FSU game. Two parts to that. One, its obvious the ODU coaching staff openly discussed their Game Plan as How to create an upset and it fit in beautifully for television because of the concise points of it. CBS Sports has the deal with ODU's conference so those announcers probably are not used to calling games against a formerly ranked team.
Second point is that our team was playing right into it. If we had boatraced them in the first half like last season than it would have been game over but we played right into the ODU coach's list of upset markers. We deserved every shitty comment they said yesterday. The only one that was a bit shocking to hear them announce was the one late in the fourth where they acknowledged every big call by the officials had gone against Tech in the game. Also I don't care about losing but I don't want to be embarrassed.
The last time. This team doesn't have that potential. This team is closer to. Good teams don't lose to ODU. We are the national embarrassment this season. And this is the second time in a decade we have humiliated ourselves like this. Not good at all. That loss was infuriating because that was a good team, and it showed at the end of the year. This is "wake me up next year" levels of bad loss. We just lost to a winless team that got curbstomped by 52 points to Liberty. Duke, ND, Miami Do we really now think we have a shot against any of them?
At this point I kinda wish I could. Waste of money to watch this garbage live. They better start showing up. Notre Dame ticket prices straight asinine at this point. Pathetic effort everywhere today. Our coaches were completely outclassed. Horrible gameplan and demonstrated an inability to make adjustments. This is a program-resetting loss. Honestly this is up there with JMU.
Good luck trying to sell anything in the again with recruiting, or anywhere instate for that matter. Any and all momentum gained thus far has been completely pissed away and then some. I think a lot of people will begin to lose faith in the program after a performance like this. Wonder how that Drive for 25 fundraiser is going to go this week now. Absolutely devastating. Bad games happen, but JMU was on a short week after a big loss. Almost a perfect storm. Fuente et al had an extra week to plan and focus on this game.
Pathetic loss that will stick with us forever. I wasn't expecting much out of this season anyway 4 or 5 losses but ODU? Damn son. I thought we were done with this late Beamer mid s type of games. I ain't even mad, I'm just disappointed. Fuente, Foster, all you players can walk home and think about what you did.
We'll talk in the morning. I had neither the patience nor the desire to put it up this time. ZERO excuses. ZERO reason. That's all. Would definitely hope the answer is yes, especially considering Willis did his in one quarter and Jackson had three quarters. These are the types of games that have slowly lead me to not enjoy sports nearly as much. The highs are not nearly as high as the lows feel.
Depending on the health of JJ going into next weekend we could see quite a dilemma. I think Willis did a good job when he came in, seemed patient in the pocket. But Hooker may be better for the system.
Should be an interesting week. I'm all for freshman taking a redshirt year to bulk up and learn to play college ball, but I wish for just one moment that we had insight into how far back Quincy is from the rest of the room.
Are we talking "just needs to learn the playbook and he's solid for next year" with him, or are we talking "if we're with four games to play, he's the starter for the balance and still gets to redshirt"? Just my curiosity about someone who comes in with quite the reputation from being in the Elite I don't expect to see him this year. I agree. It's an odd way to handle it. I feel there has to be a method to the madness and that's even behind why Willis is ahead of Hooker. It does seem like Willis has a decent set of wheels tho.
I just don't know how much we would have to change the playbook in one week. I thought Willis did a better job of feeling pressure and of checking down to other receivers. He also showed wheels that i didn't expect from him.
Our backup QBs don't play when the starter is struggling. It takes an injury for Fuente to make a change. Considering how we were running the ball I thought they may put in Hooker when JJ went down. Willis played pretty well but Hooker being a dual threat would have been something they likely didn't prep for.
Small silver lining? Major reality check. We all knew from the beginning this "should" be a rebuilding year. We got high on our own supply. Now, we shouldn't have lost to ODU by any measure, but we "should" be grounded again.
I think the players AND coaches got too cocky. Hopefully they'll actually commit to this mentality moving forward. We are not world beaters quite yet, but we aren't the shit team Tech fielded today. As much as I wanted this to be a homecoming for all hokies and alumni, this had the makings of an upset with us coming to town.
Every game, including this one against ODU, cannot be overlooked. We were outcoached and outplayed. The ODU players and coaching staff wanted this more than we did. Does it sting? Fcuk yes it does. But our coaching staff and players must learn, reflect, and prepare for next week. The only way to do that is to win a National Championship. Even that will only make it less dirty. I'm getting tired of the inferiority complex among our fanbase.
You can't have a Serious Long term Trend of losing Bigtime games and keep expecting to win. You wanna get hype show something. That Alabama Game of The roster was packed the team seemed like it was ready.
Then the 2 Top 10 team rankings that actually felt valid. These last few years are the opposite of that and that is showing up, here on twitter, other places. The real problem was that we started to believe the hype after playing a pretty mediocre Florida State team. VT is a good football team. I can't really explain what happened to the defense today, but whatever that was needs to get fixed.
Bud has saved many bad offensive games that VT has had. That entire and season I think most recently was all the Defense. He's been great for VT! And Beamer and Bud both deserve recognition but a statue doesnt seem right. Once again he is a good DC but if you look at his numbers consistently he's not great.
He's way better than I would be, but in Ranking Defense by Yards Allowed per Play over the last 10 years he avg a 30th ranking as best Defense.
What are you talking about? How exactly is this Foster's MO? The thing fans usually bitch about is Foster's defense against dual threat QBs. That wasn't the case today and frankly I fail to see any facts that support your post. In Joel's prediction of Offense scoring 38 points was pretty close to being right He has a system that requires a lot of moving parts. He game-plans accordingly. Most importantly, the players practice accordingly. Change up the QB, and if he is the least bit capable, that QB tends to get a good 2 quarters of a free-hand.
Even if Foster makes the right adjustments, the defensive players have to be flexible enough to roll with the changes and execute, and hope the O was able to keep up. When you have as young a D as ours, a QB change has just that much more likelihood of succeeding.
Add in a bad day from the O dropped passes, bad decisions, giving up sacks to 3 man rushes , and you are going to lose against just about anyone. The change of QB angle is what I was thinking of also. I completely missed the 1st half so I don't know what Williams looked like in their O This is what happens when you allow an inferior opponent to get confidence. You find yourself in a dogfight and you end up losing your confidence.
I never thought we were going to actually lose the game. I kept waiting for the strip sack, int or some turnover. It never came Finished the game and went to the liquor cabinet - only one inch of bourbon left Love that woman! Basil Hayden and I ate comiserating with the the rest of you. If we're going to have a "development" season why not just fucking play Quincy. Dudes definitely gonna have hiccups his first year.
Just fucking do it now and get them all over with and have a fucking baller team in I was just going to post "at least we weren't ranked 1 overall and dropped a game to a 16th seed". Our loss is much much worse.
We lost to an Old Dominion team that was basically a home game for us. UMBC actually had to win a conference to make into the brackets.
This is by far the worst loss in VT football history. FCS Nattys don't hold a hill of shit in division 1. I agree this is a dagger to recruiting in Well I know for a fact we don't schedule JMU anymore because we are afraid to get our ass kicked by them.
He has called Whit to try to get JMU on the schedule multiple times, and Whit will not return the phone calls. Don't schedule teams that play in your backyard where you recruit on a regular basis. The whole point of this game was recruiting. This is blatantly false. P5 schools lose to lower FBS schools every year, even highly ranked teams.
No one seed had ever lost to a Especially not one of the most dominant regular season teams of recent memory. I'll cite that loss until another 1 seed loses, and probably even after that, and I'll be certain that whatever they throw back at me wouldn't approach how embarrassing that loss was for UVA.
That game was on the front page of every sports section in America the next day. This game won't get front page outside of Virginia. They just said it on ABC what happened to us today hasn't happened in 40 years.
It's just as bad. The only way this loss would have measured up is if we were a Bama tier football program. I'd also like to add that it also hadn't happened before the dawn of civilization either.
Don't want there to be any confusion. Except we are getting destroyed, deservedly, on social media. RedditCFB in particular. Even UMBC's twitter got in on the roast. ESPN had it on their "headlines" scroll during their game broadcasts last night.
It is a massive story that is getting widespread attention. We are the butt's butt right now. I will never hear the end of it personally from Tennessee fans. RedditCFB is the best place to go right now if you need to be inoculated. They're pretty harsh over there when something like this happens but the harshest stuff they say is usually very very funny. I went over to read it last night and we're being trashed and rightly so , but half of the stuff on there made me laugh. They even honored us with a flair change.
Flair change? It still looks like the regular VT to me - or maybe I don't know what flair is, I only generally do the minimum. Whew, we have had some painful and embarrassing losses over the years, but it's super rare the defense gets so much of the blame like this. Normally if the defense gives up a lot of points it's because it's against a good team or the offense keeps going 3 and out or both. What a display of ineptitude. Fuck you Florence.
Fact of the matter is I knew this was going to be the result from kick off. Team was just flat. Kept Jackson in to long, blah blah blah we all watched it we know what happened. Bright note is this might be a like others have said JMU all over again. Hope this lights a fire in the team. I worry we don't have that type of leader to rally around We likely just lost 1 of our 4 captains to injury.
I agree but even before the injury they would show JJ sitting on the bench just I mean no emotion nothing. I know I obviously didn't make it anywhere in my Single A football career but if we were getting beat by someone who had no business being on the field with us I was pissed and slamming shit and yelling, did no good but damn look like you care.
Im with you. Even when he came back out in crutches I would have thought he would be coaching the guys but nothing. Very disappointing. I was just making a point that the coaches appointed him as a captain which could be alarming.
The coaches have a lot of work to do to get this group together this week. Also, not to start shitting on another LB, but i noticed Rivers looked really slow out there. Like slower than most everyone else. I second this. When he was in position, he was getting blown up. On first watch I feel this was a really weak performance from him.
Let's hope this is an exception game, and not an indication of his ability to play at a high level. Yeesh pic. Willie Taggert looking at the box score:. Fuente Plays a QB that can't throw or run , then expects his 2 to come in and carry the load.
Even Last year he played him and it cost us a couple games.. While the QB situation may have contributed, I'm thinking our D giving up 49 points just maybe was a bigger factor. The offense being incapable of moving the ball or sustaining drives puts a lot of pressure on the D.
The D played terrible today, but the QB play looked like a mediocre highschooler trying to play a P5 game. Maybe I don't remember well, but I don't want to rerun the game. The tackling is bad and the secondary looked like boys playing against grown men today. Don't know if there are any answers other than take your lumps as you grow up.
My bad everyone. My wife and I held our first watch party during the Miami game last year. Won't happen a third time. Sad that it took an injury to Jackson to make a change, but I really liked what I saw from Willis.
Even on the successful plays - the TD to Hazelton - the throws weren't where they needed to be. He just really can't place the ball where he needs to. For Willis to come in and make some of the plays he did were impressive. Hazelton should catch that 4th down throw, but Willis can't fastball that in as much.
But man, he's got a cannon and I can see the offense humming if he got more reps with the 1's. I'd even be willing to take an uptick in turnovers if it meant a higher ceiling.
Hazleton was awful today. He has a serious case of the dropsies that cost us timr and time again. He got open to score on a defender falling down, but other than that, a very forgettable game from him. I cannot blame a qb for throwing too hard if it's on the money. There's not excuses. Damon should have caught that. Losing in single coverage on defense on deep balls all day long. Yes, but if I remember that game correctly, we pretty much locked that stuff out after the first quarter.
This game When it came out a few years ago we were playing this game I thought damn this is stupid. When I learned that I couldn't watch it because it was on a stupid channel I thought damn this is stupid. When I checked in on the score I thought damn this is stupid. When I heard that JJ is out for a while I thought damn this is stupid.
While if you had to assign blame for the loss, it would probably have to be on our defense and secondary in particular, our offense looked pretty anemic this game as well. Going to be a long season I think. I don't think I'm taking this as harshly as you guys are, but I'm still going to break out the Maker's 46 and get off the internet.
I don't know to much about recruiting, does ODU just have better recruits on their offense than we have on defense? I do like this thought as it could make us all feel better but unfortunately it's not even close to the truth. That was absolutely a horrible loss, but I'm not sure why everyone is acting like this is the worst loss to ever happen to anyone.
I think we can bounce back and still have a decent season. The boys need to focus on the ACC now, we're still in conference. Odu is the worst team we've lost to in a very, very long time.
They got shelled by Liberty and Charlotte to open the year. We had no business allowing this game to be anywhere within a 30 point contest and we lost. Agree we were overrated, and you can debate whether JMU or this was a worse loss I think this for overall timing and negative perception impact instate.
It can't be shrugged off as well we were young and overrated we all knew it. If we truly want to view VT as a football program that can compete nationally, you cannot lose to ODU. It is unacceptable. Alum, i love you bro, but that's as hyperbolic as you can get. He is right actually. This really is one of the largest upsets in recent years. We were favored by 30 points and ranked This is actually a monumental upset.
Unfortunately, it doesn't feel special because VT is used to being upset. Yeah I'd say so. That APPSt team wasnt bad. They were a team that could have and would have beaten many FBS programs that season.
They won on a blocked FG. This ODU team was not good. They were on the season having just lost to Liberty, Florida International, and Charlotte, a FCS school that only started playing in We were a 4TD favorite in a game that should have been a walk in the park.
We lost by 14, a 6 touchdown swing on the spread. Yeah, this one is worse. Even worse for us, it's the second time this program has done this against an in state dreg the past 8 years. Our recruiting took a massive hit after JMU, and this will hurt us worse because it happened in the We might never regain any foothold in that region again. Game was played in and they won the and National Championship. I want to say they got the 3peat in as well.
I legit had to Google this to make sure I wasn't too drunk. We last lost to Marshall in Let me go get another beer Huh I must be thinking of that 3-OT game that we actually did win I blacked out, what happened? He's already smug so tomorrow should be super fun. The loss stinks. However, watching Fuente standing there emotionless on the sidelines while an emotionless QB continues to underperform all game long is just as bad and cannot keep happening if this program wants to be successful.
Willis came in and was clearly more confident and effective than Jackson. Fuente needs to stop being so stubborn and actually coach.
Take Jackson out for a series and actually coach him while Willis or Hooker is in to spark a drive. Seriously, what is the point of having back-up QB's other than to replace an injured starter if you have no intention on ever playing them.
Would you leave a starting FG kicker in the game week after week if he kept missing FG's? Fuente has demonstrated that a single fumble from a RB will get you the bench for the rest of the game, even if it's still early in the game.
I just don't understand how you stand there for 3 hours without even attempting to change the QB, even just to light a fire under JJ's butt to play better. I was all in for JJ the starter after the first 2 games, little slow but showed promise of growth. But during the game last night I wanted to see what our other QBs could do. It was apparent we weren't going to win with JJ last night to anyone of any age watching that game.
This lose is on everyone on the team, but I put most of the blame on Fuente. I feel he mismanaged this game. Also, one thing that has consistently shown up. While Farley has a ton of potential he misses so many tackles. It's frustrating but it should get better as he gets older. If Farley got eaten up, then what happened to Watts Wasn't talking about him, but now that you mention it.
Yes both our corners looked outsized and outmatched. Divine would have helped. I was so optimistic about this year, probably a little to optimistic. If he is neglected, he will become destitute, he needs someone to guide him, to become something in life. He disrespects him and has no consideration for his wife; if she becomes his enemy, everything will go wrong for her. You may also be interested in: Ifa Odi Meji sign.

Idi-Eka was a popular Ayo player in the prime of his life. News reached heaven of his skill in the game and death sent him a message that she was going to play Ayo with him. The tradition was that anyone who was defeated by death in the game had to go to heaven. Idi-Eka waited for death for three years without it appearing.
After three years, death was on his quest, but Idi-Eka was too old for the game. He could no longer see seeds. When death came, Idi-Eka called one of her sons named Ikumakpayi to play with her.
Death conquered him, but his mother, who was an esoteric seer, had already perceived that her son was going to be defeated by death. She made the sacrifice. After defeating Ikumakpayi, Death was preparing to go with him to heaven when Esu intervened to taunt her. Watcha gonna do! I'm gonna praise him! I'm gonna praise him, let me show you HOW! Holy One!
