At Water 7, unfortunately, the Going Merry was declared unfit for sailing any further, and Usopp's reluctance to let the ship go led to him leaving the crew.
All this was fuelled by his insecurity about not being powerful or useful enough to the crew and feeling inferior in terms of strength. Usopp fought Luffy, lost, and left the crew. After the events of Enies Lobby wrapped up, he apologized to Luffy and was invited back on the team once more. Nico Robin joined the Straw Hat Pirates at the end of the Alabasta arc because she wanted to die and Luffy chose to go against her decision and saved her life.
Having nowhere to go, she ended up staying with the crew until the events of Water 7 transpired. Robin was found out by the CP-9 and asked to turn herself in as she could read the Poneglyphs and could help the World Government revive the Pluton.
Although Robin initially declined, she was forced to agree because had she not done it, a Buster Call would've been launched against the Straw Hat Pirates. To save their lives, Robin chose to go ahead with what the CP-9 said. Eventually, the Straw Hats chased her all the way to Enies Lobby to bring her back.
His biological father, Vinsmoke Judge had decided to get him married to Pudding, the 35th daughter of the Charlotte family. Although Sanji never wanted to go ahead with the marriage, he was forced into doing it by having explosive cuffs placed on his hands with which he cooked for his friends and being threatened with the death of Zeff, who he considers to be his real father.
Luffy eventually comes to the difficult decision to buy a completely new ship, but Usopp strongly protested this as he's grown quite connected to the ship after repairing it so many times. Feeling like the Going Merry is just a part of the crew as he is, Usopp disagrees with Luffy's decision so much he challenges him to a fight.
But for this act of mutiny, Luffy declares that Usopp cannot return to his crew regardless of the battle's outcome but Usopp would be allowed to keep the Going Merry if he was successful. Their fight was a tough one as Usopp had come up with many strategies to deal with Luffy after knowing him for so long, and had even gone as far as causing a large explosion with his Kaen Boshi.
Usopp manages to keep his ground utilizing tricks such as an Impact Dial from Skypiea, but eventually runs out of tricks. Luffy eventually beats him, solemnly puts his straw hat back on, and allows Usopp to keep the Going Merry anyway. As the crew leaves Usopp with tears in their eyes, this broke the hearts of man fans of the series. As promised, Usopp returns to Scrap Island at 10pm for the duel with Luffy. Luffy tells him not to have any regrets regardless of the outcome.
Usopp replies that, unlike previous enemies, he's well aware of what Luffy is capable of, and is ready to defeat him. He tells Luffy to come at him with everything he has. The rest of the Straw Hat Pirates watch from the deck of the Going Merry with varying degrees of concern. Usopp starts with some of the boasts he made when they first met.
This stops Luffy in his tracks out of concern. Usopp mocks him for showing pity on the enemy, and blinds him with a Flash Dial, then hits him with Hissatsu Tamago Boshi, pelting his former captain with rotten eggs. Luffy tells Usopp to get serious; Usopp says he is , reminding him this is how he fights. Usopp shoots Hissatsu Tabasco Boshi right in Luffy's mouth, making him spit fire and fall back right onto a pile of caltrops, scratching up his body.
When Luffy gets up, Usopp knocks him back down with Hissatsu Koshou Boshi, which explodes in a cloud of ground pepper. Luffy coughs in fits and repeatedly lands in the caltrops. Luffy recovers enough to finally get out of the caltrops, remarking how much it hurts. Usopp says he won't give Luffy a chance to retaliate, and starts to amp up the danger with Shuriken Ryuuseigun, firing strings of throwing stars at Luffy, forcing him to focus on dodging. He gets in an area that appears to be smoky.
